Diversinet Delivers Linux-Based Wireless E-Commerce Security

Software security solutions provider Diversinet Corp. (Nasdaq: DVNT) announced Tuesday that it is extending support of its Software Development Kit (SDK) for creating wireless e-commerce applications to the Linux open-source platform.

The new SDK product will allow developers who work with Linux and other UNIX environments to utilize Diversinet’s Passport Certificate Server, along with its Digital Permit Server, to provide secure authorization services over distributed wireless architectures.

“With the proliferation of wireless devices and the number of operating systems those devices run on, it is essential for us to extend our platforms to meet the requirements of multiple operating systems,” commented Diversinet president and CEO Nagy Moustafa.

Linux, which is a UNIX variant operating system that boasts open-source code and a lower total cost of ownership, is being deployed by an increasing number of e-commerce operations.

Digital Permits and Certificates

Diversinet’s Digital Permit Server allows content providers and other organizations to issue authorization for remote access to databases and services for users who work with resource-constrained devices, such as pagers, cellular phones and smart cards.

The company announced a new version of the product, which is designed to issue digital permits for both wired and wireless permissions, at the RSA Security Conference 2000 in San Jose, California.

Digital permits are secure tokens that carry information to such applications as banking, digital coupons, e-commerce, eligibility for government programs and health care plan entitlements.

The Diversinet Digital Permit Server works in conjunction with the company’s Passport Certificate Server for wireless devices and the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), providing digital certificates for authenticating end users and service providers.

The Passport Certificate Server issues WAP WTLS 1.1 (Wireless Transport Layer Security) certificates. WTLS is a wireless version of TLS, a wireline standard for secure communications that upgrades the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) standard.

Digital certificates authenticate both the content provider and the end user, thereby safeguarding wireless transactions.

Standards for the Wireless World

Earlier this month, Diversinet disclosed that it has joined The Radicchio Initiative, an industry coalition that was established to push public key infrastructure (PKI)-based wireless e-commerce security standards.

Diversinet, along with Giesecke & Devrient, Mitsui, Redknee, Schlumberger, TC TrustCenter, Texas Instruments and Thyron, joined a roster of other Radicchio members to address a number of critical concerns.

“The vitality of the market hinges on consumer confidence that their personal information will not be compromised in any way,” Moustafa said. “Radicchio is proof positive that the major players in the industry are working cooperatively to promote standards across the board, and we are proud to join this effort.”
