CRM Report: CRM Powers Oracle Past Competitors

Dataquest, Inc., a unit of research firm GartnerGroup (NYSE: IT), said worldwide database software spending reached $8 billion in 1999, with Oracle leading the way.

The company said Oracle garnered the top spot — some 31.1 percent of market share — with a strong performance in its CRM and e-commerce enterprise applications. IBM trailed slightly behind with a 29.9 percent share, while Microsoft pulled in a 13.1 percent share.

Dataquest predicted that the worldwide database industry would reach $12.7 billion by 2004, with NT platform revenue equaling that of UNIX by then. The company said Oracle, IBM and Microsoft would continue to dominate the market, but that niche providers, such as those in the ASP hosting market, could make inroads.
