Canada, Australia Ink Global E-Commerce Agreement

The governments of Canada and Australia have jointly signed a statement of common principles on the treatment of electronic commerce, which includes joint commitments to improving international protections for intellectual property, personal privacy and consumer rights in an era of electronic transactions and Internet use.

“Canada shares Australia’s commitment to developing an open and effective global market for e-commerce, based on solid legal and policy foundations,” said Australia’s Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Richard Alston, today.

The statement sets out the countries’ common approaches to taxes and tariffs, electronic transmission of content; competitive communications infrastructure provision, and the responsibility of governments as role models in developing e-commerce.

“This statement confirms the importance both countries place on international cooperation to accelerate the development of e-commerce,” said Alston.

The two countries also took the opportunity to call for an early decision by the World Trade Organization on the reinstatement of the moratorium on the imposition of customs duties on e-commerce.
