Ebookers.com (Nasdaq: EBKR) rose 2 to close at 11 1/2 Wednesday after the company, Europe’s largest online travel firm, announced an alliance with France Telecom (NYSE: FTE).
The alliance gives the London-based Ebookers access to France Telecom’s 1.3 million registered Internet users and to its rapidly growing base of mobile device customers. France Telecom has ordered five million Internet-ready telephones for delivery over the next seven months.
France Telecom will display Ebookers’ search engine, in French, to customers of its Wanadoo ISP service; its Voila search engine; and Itineris Services, its new wireless telephone service, as well as Voila Mobile, its new portal and search engine for mobile users. Wanadoo, France’s number one Internet service, has more than 1.3 million subscribers, and France Telecom is also the country’s largest provider of mobile phones.
