Shares of online software retailer McAfee.com (Nasdaq: MCAF), which develops anti-virus software and other utilities, gained 5-1/8 to 54 on Wednesday after the company announced a two-year distribution and advertising agreement with America Online.
Under the terms of the agreement, McAfee.com will be the premier anti-virus service provider on AOL, AOL.com, and AOL’s [email protected] marketplace. McAfee.com will also sponsor an anti-virus center, a PC download center and a software development center on AOL.
McAfee.com is setting itself up as an online applications services provider for consumers, and the company’s numbers are impressive. Last week, McAfee.com announced that its Clinic subscription service, which gives customers Web-based virus protection, PC maintenance and optimization services, had signed up more than 200,000 paying subscribers in its first four months of operation.
