New MacShield Software Aims to Batten Down the Hatch

Centurion Technologies on Tuesday unveiled the latest edition of its MacShield security application, which restores a computer to its previous unaltered condition upon rebooting. The new offering works on parallel environments, allowing the user to run both Mac and Windows at the same time while still protecting the computer.

Centurion Technologies released on Tuesday new hard-drive protection software that brings a new approach to securing Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) computers by never allowing unwanted downloads or system changes to penetrate the hard drive.

MacShield Universal goes beyond the features of its predecessor, MacShield Enhanced Edition, by introducing features for use with Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) processors and new utilities.

MacShield Universal restores the computer to its previous unaltered condition upon rebooting. The product works with Mac OS X 10.3 through 10.4 and Intel-based processors, in addition to legacy PowerPC Mac computers.

"There are several software firms that offer similar security strategies, but Centurion pioneered this technology. It is the most secure and has never been breached," Centurion Account Representative Chez Barbosa told MacNewsWorld.

What It Does

Centurion's new hard drive technology allows users to restore their Apple computer's configuration to its previous state using a procedure similar to the System Restore feature in Windows XP.

"But the engineering of MacShield goes far deeper than the what System Restore feature does in the Windows platform," said Barbosa.

MacShield Universal clears unwanted changes such as downloads or deletions, system settings changes, and installed programs. Upon reboot, all changes disappear, and the computer is restored to its original configuration.

Users can keep wanted changes to the configuration and retain other data.

Comfort Zone

Though viruses are not a major concern on the Mac platform, this new product gives users an extra layer of security by ensuring that no future malware will infect the hard drive. MacShield Universal protects the integrity of a system's configuration.

"Because viruses are not as much of a concern with Mac users, MacShield Universal lets [them] have some fun experimenting without worrying about breaking anything," said Barbosa.

Using MacShield Universal's added security layer promotes creativity because users don't have to worry about causing permanent changes to their systems, he explained. The software eliminates user errors and unwanted changes.

Additionally, its Stealth Mode provides undetected protection and eliminates attempts to bypass or negate security. An added security feature is the option to set up to three passwords to access the system.

Peace of Mind

MacShield Universal provides enterprise-strength protection to computers, returning the hard drive to the predefined configuration upon restart and removing all temporary changes. It also minimizes computer maintenance and eliminates having to spend time restoring systems that have been affected by changes, deletions and downloads, according to Centurion officials.

"Mac users can be confident in the ultimate protection of their desktops," said Keith Rickman, vice president of Centurion Technologies. "MacShield Universal gives users peace of mind, knowing that their computers will be protected. A simple reboot, and the computer will be restored to its originally established configuration."

Storage Silos

Another feature is the ability to create what Centurion calls Persistent Storage space upon installation. Users can save documents, e-mails and other information to this protected area of the hard drive, where it remains unharmed every time the computer is restarted.

In addition, the software also allows users to work with parallel environments. For instance, users can run both Mac and Windows operating systems simultaneously while still protecting the computer.

MacShield Universal is available for US$69. It can be purchased directly from Centurion Technologies or from distributors and resellers.
