MontaVista Software this week released two new versions of its Linux software, one for mobile platforms and another for embedded Linux installations.
The new MontaVista Mobilinux 5.0, an operating system used mainly in smartphones, has support for SE Linux (Security-Enhanced Linux).
"Advanced security, provided through SE Linux, is an important technology that will be offered across our products and a wide range of processors through future releases," Joerg Bertholdt, MontaVista director of embedded platform marketing , told LinuxInsider.
The Professional Version
Linux Professional Edition 5.0, which it developed in partnership with
Advanced Micro Circuits Corp. for AMCC's Power Architecture processors, is being recognized by the Linux community as a strong move in the embedded Linux market.
The technology partnership gives developers the opportunity to work on projects on Power Architecture platforms, to make the most of real-time capabilities, a small memory footprint, high-performance development tools and support of MontaVista's latest Linux Professional Edition 5.0.

This is not the first time MontaVista is applying its Linux solution for 440EPx processors. "The announcement is of the upgraded availability of 440EPx in MontaVista's latest Pro 5," Bertholdt said.
Customers' Call
AMCC's decision to work with MontaVista Software lies in a fundamental business rule: Give customers what they want.
"MontaVista is one of the largest providers of Linux, and many of our customers prefer their products," Rich Flair, AMCC marketing communications manager, told LinuxInsider.
The MontaVista Linux upgrade for AMCC processors "helps enable our customers who prefer to use MontaVista Linux as their operating system platform. They are a key part of our overall solution for our customers, existing and new," Flair said. The 5.0 release also will allow customers the ability to develop applications quickly, "with better differentiated products, and at a reduced cost."
Wider Benefit
"Support for AMCC's 440EPx in MontaVista's Pro 5.0 standard product allows customers the ability to develop against AMCC's 440EPx reference board, while they develop their own custom hardware implementation leveraging AMCC silicon and MontaVista Linux," MontaVista's Bertholdt stated.
