Roxio has released a software application that converts computer-based video file formats and DVDs into files compatible with Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) 
TV, the iPod and the soon-to-be-released iPhone.
The converter, dubbed "Roxio Crunch," is designed for Mac users. It can convert native QuickTime file formats such as MPEG-4, as well as non-QuickTime file formats such as MPEG-2 and DivX.
Crunch initially became available as an electronic download for the Mac from Roxio's Web site. However, the software will now be sold in stores in a single package for Mac OS X and Windows .
Crunching the Numbers
Crunch offers preprogrammed settings for output to Apple's iPod or iPhone that should make conversion relatively easy, said Zippy Aima, an analyst with Frost & Sullivan .
"Apple products do so much in the media space that companies are looking to cater to consumers and associate with its products," Aima told MacNewsWorld. "Many want to be associated with the Apple brand."
The Mac-only product is being offered for US$39.99 and the hybrid Windows/Mac version will be available later this year for a suggested retail price of $49.99.

Roxio is the maker of Toast and Popcorn 2, popular software apps that convert video for syncing to the iPhone, iPod or Apple TV. Crunch's key features: batch video conversion; allowing users to easily convert numerous videos at one time; and custom MPEG-4 and H.264 quality settings.
The Crunch software duplicates most of the functionality of Popcorn and Toast, Aima said, but it is aimed at users who want to convert digital video for the Apple TV, iPod or iPhone but aren't looking to copy video to CD or DVD.
Apple TV, iPod and the iPhone part of a "new wave" of devices that provide consumers with a "broader range of options for how and where they enjoy their personal entertainment," said Vito Salvaggio, vice president of Roxio's Mac Business Unit, Sonic Solutions.
System requirements for Roxio Crunch: G4 or better; Apple TV, video iPod or iPhone; 256 MB RAM; Mac OS X v10.4.9 or later; 50 MB hard disk space for installation; up to 15 GB of temporary free disk space during usage; QuickTime 7.1.5 or later; and iTunes 7.1.1 or later, according to the company.
