TheTrip.com and Visa U.S.A. have launched a new e-commerce program that rewards travelers with bonus miles each time they purchase airline tickets online. In addition to the obvious benefit for e-commerce buyers, this rewards program highlights a strategic opportunity for e-commerce merchants.

By aligning with Visa and other credit card companies, merchants can afford to offer much greater incentives to encourage consumers to buy online.

The Bigger Picture

In fact, this announcement is one of many e-commerce partnerships that Visa is making with online merchants, according to Lisa Silver, senior vice president of advertising for Visa U.S.A.

Silver said that, "As e-commerce continues to grow, these alliances will serve to accelerate its adoption." Visa indicates that 51% of people shopping online use their Visa card for payment.

Program Specifics

To kick off the new TripMiles Reward program, travelers will earn triple the miles for every dollar they spend online with their Visa card on TheTrip.Com.

Antoine Toffa, president and CEO of TheTrip.com believes that their new "TripMiles Reward program is the first of its kind on the Internet, and the most generous rewards program we've seen to date." Toffa indicates that frequent flyer miles are a strong incentive because the are "by far the favored perk" of business travelers.

Later this month, travelers can begin tracking their account balance online and converting their TripMiles rewards into frequent flyer miles with participating major airlines.
