Apple Makes Statement to the Press About RealNetworks Harmony Technology

Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) today released the following statement:
We are stunned that RealNetworks (Nasdaq: RNWK) has adopted the tactics and ethics of a hacker to break into the iPod, and we are investigating the implications of their actions under the DMCA and other laws.
We strongly caution Real and their customers that when we update our iPod software from time to time it is highly likely that Real's Harmony technology will cease to work with current and future iPods.

From a social perspective, legal consequences tend to be associated with being caught, not with committing the action and Sarbanes-Oxley may therefore "incent" more cover-ups than compliance. From a technical perspective, little can be done without fully integrating production and reporting -- something that can't be done in any practical way with Wintel's client-server architecture.
