Dell unveiled an array of virtualization solutions Wednesday. The hardware maker's new lineup includes more than a dozen servers, tools and services designed to make the deployment and management of virtual environments as simple as possible for enterprises regardless of size, the company said. Four new virtualization-optimized servers stand at the center of the hardware manufacturer's latest offering. The new Dell PowerEdge R805 and R905 include preinstalled versions of either VMware ESXi 3.5 or Citrix XenServer Dell Express Edition hypervisors.

IBM unveiled a new research initiative intended to solve problems associated with virtualization and security Tuesday in San Francisco at RSA 2008. Code-named "Phantom," the project will be run jointly by IBM X-Force threat analysis team and IBM Research. The project seeks to create virtualization security technology to efficiently monitor and disrupt malicious communications between virtual machines, the company said.

Citrix and HP announced a deal Thursday that integrates the virtualization company's XenServer into HP's 64-bit ProLiant Servers. The jointly developed server virtualization solution, Citrix XenServer HP Select Edition, will be available to both HP and Citrix customers.

Battling furiously to catch up to market leader VMware in the hypervisor market, Microsoft has unveiled what it calls a "feature-complete" version of its Hyper-V product. A hypervisor is a virtualization platform that lets multiple operating systems run on one host computer at the same time.
