On Slashdot's Lost Taco and Apple's Big Turnover
August 29, 2011
There may not be enough tequila in this world to see the tech community all the way through to the end of August 2011. We've had Googlerola; we've had the ever-escalating software patent storm. We've had HP's lily-livered maneuvers regarding webOS and PCs. Did we need more than that? No, we did not. Yet more is just what we got.
Tim Cook's Apple: Nothing Will Change or Ever Be the Same
August 26, 2011
In his first memo to employees as Apple's official CEO Thursday, new chief executive Tim Cook told them he wants them to be confident that Apple is not going to change now that the company's cofounder Steve Jobs has stepped out of the driver's seat. That's a promise that some Apple watchers believe Cook will keep in the coming months.
Jobs to Apple's Board: 'That Day Has Come'
August 25, 2011
An era came to an end Wednesday as Steve Jobs announced his resignation as CEO of Apple, handing Tim Cook the reins of the company Jobs created and transformed into a leader of the tech industry. Jobs will remain on as chairman of Apple. In a brief letter of resignation, Jobs wrote that the day has come when he "could no longer meet my duties and expectations."

Gazelle takes your old cellphones, laptops, digital cameras, camcorders, GPS devices, game systems, calculators, e-readers, LCD monitors, tablets, and any other out-of-date electronic equipment cluttering up your home or office, and turns it all into cash. It has paid out more than $25 million to 175,000-plus customers and kept 300 tons of electronic waste out of landfills.
Google: Everything's Coming Up Pluses
July 15, 2011
By most measures, the last two weeks have been a nonstop love fest for Google, beginning with the immediate acceptance of Google+ and culminating with stellar earnings on Thursday and an impressive performance by CEO Larry Page during the earnings call. Briefly, Google's second quarter revenues clocked in at a 32 percent increase compared with the same period last year, rising to $9.03 billion.
Zuckerberg Finds Friends on Google+
July 05, 2011
Who's the most popular person on Google's spanking new social networking site? Britney? Lady Gaga? Larry or Sergey? Nope, it's Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. He has racked up a whopping 29,543 followers on Google+ as of Tuesday, beating out Google cofounders Larry Page -- who came in second with 19,878 -- and Sergey Brin, who took fourth place with 15,646.
Dell's Lesson for RIM and MS: Do It Steve Jobs' Way
July 04, 2011
I just came back from Dell's financial analyst meeting, and the firm is doing amazingly well. That wasn't the way it was a few years ago when folks were calling for a shakeup at the top. Michael Dell, along with an excellent team, turned the firm around, and he kind of did it by channeling Steve Jobs.
At 100, IBM Still Wants to Change the World
June 16, 2011
On Thursday, IBM rang the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange in celebration of 100 years since its founding. The company evolved from a pre-World War I alliance of firms manufacturing tabulating machines and clocks into a global computer giant that helped to usher in the modern age. IBM boasts an impressive number of patents and has improved many technologies over the years.
IBM: A Century of Innovation - and Counting
June 14, 2011
Decade by decade, celebratory gravitas tends to accumulate and peak when a subject hits the centenary. Though 100th birthdays are far more common today than they've ever been before in human history (thanks to better diets and modern healthcare), reaching the centennial milestone is still nothing to sneeze at. It also tends to be an accomplishment that's far harder for organizations to achieve than it is for people.
I Need a Hero
April 25, 2011
I've been watching some of the drama surrounding Donald Trump, the concerns surrounding the air traffic controllers, the close call with the first lady, tourists being shot in Florida, U.S. citizens being shot off their jet skis, the inability to control spending -- and the "Shrek" version of "I need a Hero" started playing in my head.
Google Investors' Motto: Don't Be Youthful
April 16, 2011
Investors met Google's earnings for the first quarter with a near universal sigh of disappointment. The next sound was the dumping of Google's shares, which fell by some 7 percent in the aftermath. The company reported an adjusted profit of $8.08 a share -- which missed analyst expectations of $8.11 a share.

April 08, 2011
Larry Page took the wheel as Google's CEO this week, and he's already shaking things up. On Thursday, Page reportedly placed key executives in charge of individual business units, indicating he wanted to simplify product and engineering structures with one executive leading each functional group. The new SVPs will report directly to him.
Virgin Oceanic Sub Will 'Fly' to Ocean Depths
April 07, 2011
Targeting one of the great mysteries that still exist here on Earth, entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson on Tuesday announced his plans to begin a series of deep-sea explorations through Virgin Oceanic, a brand-new initiative. In fact, Virgin Oceanic plans to take a solo piloted submarine to the deepest points in each of the world's five oceans.
Executing on Ideas and Other Magic Acts
April 04, 2011
Two books came out last week: Idea Man, about (and by) Paul Allen; and The Steve Jobs Way, about (but not by) Steve Jobs. These books reveal differences in the approaches the two men took to achieving their goals, showcasing why Apple is so successful and why other companies just can't make the grade. I think by looking at these two men, we can gain insights on a lot of things.
Mac OS X Honcho Logs Off
March 23, 2011
Bertrand Serlet, senior vice president of Mac software engineering and the man often regarded as the father of Mac OS X, is leaving Apple. Cupertino announced his departure in a prepared statement but did not respond to requests for further comment by press time. Serlet will be replaced by Craig Federighi, currently Apple's vice president of Mac software engineering.
Apotheker's HP: Sunny With the Promise of Clouds
March 22, 2011
HP's recent Strategy Summit in San Francisco provided a coming-out party for the company's CEO Leo Apotheker before 350-plus IT industry analysts, and he wasted little time setting an agenda. Information, Apotheker said, represents the world's "most valuable commodity," reinforcing HP's plan's to support "seamless, secure, context-aware" information access to connected devices of every kind.
Does FOSS Need a Charismatic Leader?
March 17, 2011
Apple has Steve Jobs; Microsoft has Bill Gates. The question on hand in the Linux community lately has been, does FOSS need someone similar? That, indeed, was the topic of a recent poll on TuxRadar, and it's sparked quite a debate. "Does free software need a figurehead?" the TuxRadar crew began. "We all talk about the freedom and democracy that FLOSS brings -- but does it also help to have a strong character at the top keeping us on the right path?"
Apotheker Steers HP Toward the Cloud
March 15, 2011
Monday was a big day for old-line tech companies: IBM discovered e-commerce and HP discovered cloud computing. HP CEO Leo Apotheker outlined the company's strategy at the HP Summit 2011 in San Francisco on Monday, emphasizing cloud computing, Internet-connected hardware, and its goal to plant webOS in PCs, printers, tablets and smartphones.
Making Steve Jobs Immortal
February 27, 2011
Last week, I tried to come up with some epic things I would like to think I'd do were I given six weeks to live -- a rumor that's been floating around about Steve Jobs -- and was as insanely wealthy as he is. The purpose was to focus on something other than the end we will all eventually share. One of the folks commenting on the piece thought I should have instead focused on things Jobs could do that would be more meaningful, and the comment hit a chord.
Apple Board Wins Struggle Over iThrone Secrecy
February 23, 2011
