Facebook announced Thursday that it is testing a system that will let users send prioritized messages to people who aren't among their contacts by paying $1. The initial test, part of an effort to monetize its user base, involves a small group of people. Currently, any messages Facebook members send to non-contacts go into a folder labeled "Other."

Facebook to Place In-Your-Face Video Ads in News Feeds December 19, 2012
Facebook plans to launch video advertising that will autoplay in users' news feeds some time next year, but it's not yet clear whether they'll be more like silent movies or talkies. Advertisers reportedly will have the chance to buy targeted video ads in the first part of next year. The ads will be capped at 15 seconds in length, and the video portion will make use of the autoplay function. Adding audio autoplay is still being discussed.

New smartphone regulations in China have caused concern among technology companies. The regulations, which would add a new layer of licensing and testing for smartphones, reportedly were filed to a WTO database of technical barriers to trade. In a year when precious little seems to have gone right for Facebook, Wednesday was the day an employee lockup on selling some 800 million shares expired. The stock was expected to drop, perhaps dramatically, as a result -- but it didn't. Feds Collar Would-Be Facebook Fraudster October 29, 2012
Federal authorities arrested Paul Ceglia on charges of mail and wire fraud last week. Ceglia is accused of tampering with, destroying and fabricating evidence in a scheme to defraud Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg of billions of dollars. Ceglia originally filed suit in 2010, claiming that while Zuckerberg was a student at Harvard, the two signed a contract giving Ceglia at least a 50 percent share in the project that would eventually become Facebook.
