Customers Just Want to Be Tweeted Right January 29, 2013
It's fairly common practice today for major brands to have a social media team at the ready to respond to customer complaints on social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. The practice is so widespread that the Call Center Satisfaction Index report released last week by CFI Group found that call centers should perhaps be renamed "contact centers."

Fruit of Twitter's Vine Could Be Rotten for Business January 29, 2013
This week's revelation that a pornographic video briefly made the "Editors Picks" recommendations for the new Twitter app Vine is raising questions about whether the ultra-short form video-clip sharing app is at risk for more such content -- and whether this could scare users away from the service. The app, now available for iOS devices, was recently purchased by Twitter.

Graph Search: Cultivating Big Data in Facebook's Walled Garden January 29, 2013
Facebook's recently announced beta of its new Graph Search resulted in the sorts of stories and headlines one has come to expect from a company whose every move is subject to media dissection. Some were skeptical about the value of the feature, especially its built-in restrictions: leveraging Facebook content alone and excluding well-established search entities like Google and Bing.

Facebook's Graph Search Turns Up Privacy Issues January 19, 2013
Facebook's introduction of Graph Search has been greeted with -- wait for it -- complaints about privacy. Graph Search is a feature Facebook introduced to allow users to enter parameter-based searches to find friends -- and friends of friends -- who share certain interests. A search for "friends who ski" or even more specifically "friends who ski in Arizona" will narrow the results within that field.

Facebook Rolls Out Free Voice Calling to US iPhone Users January 17, 2013
Facebook rolled out free voice calling in the U.S. through the Facebook Messenger app for iPhone on Wednesday -- with little fanfare or formality. There was no grand announcement -- media outlets noticed the new development and after inquiries, Facebook said it was an extension of the VoIP in Messenger test it launched earlier this year in Canada.

Turn Your Marketing Inside Out January 12, 2013
When asked why he robbed banks, Willie Sutton famously replied "because that's where the money is." Many e-commerce businesses adopt Willie's strategy by focusing their marketing efforts where all the people are. That may work for robbery, but it's a poor strategy for e-commerce. Instead, adopt an inside-out strategy by focusing where the fewest people are. Here's why, and how.

Facebook announced Thursday that it is testing a system that will let users send prioritized messages to people who aren't among their contacts by paying $1. The initial test, part of an effort to monetize its user base, involves a small group of people. Currently, any messages Facebook members send to non-contacts go into a folder labeled "Other."

'Going Native' Boosts Mobile Ad Outlook December 20, 2012
The U.S. mobile advertising outlook is a bit rosier, according to eMarketer's latest forecast. Overall spending on U.S. mobile advertising -- which includes display, search and messaging-based ads served on mobile phones and tablets -- is expected to see a 180 percent increase this year.

Instagram: Better to Tell Your Story Than Let Angry Users Tell It December 20, 2012
The social media era doesn't mean that more people can communicate than in the past. It means that more customers can communicate faster than ever before -- and customers always communicate more and faster when they're angry. You'd think that this message would have been internalized by the nice people over at Facebook, which owns Instagram. Sadly, that's not the case.

User Revolt Prompts Instagram to Retouch Photo Policies December 19, 2012
Instagram appears to be backtracking on plans to update its privacy policy and terms of service following an uproar from users. The proposed updates were scheduled to come into effect Jan. 16. Provisions that stirred users' wrath apparently let the company use posted images in advertisements without asking for permission or paying the users, and let Instagram share user information with affiliated businesses.

Facebook plans to launch video advertising that will autoplay in users' news feeds some time next year, but it's not yet clear whether they'll be more like silent movies or talkies. Advertisers reportedly will have the chance to buy targeted video ads in the first part of next year. The ads will be capped at 15 seconds in length, and the video portion will make use of the autoplay function. Adding audio autoplay is still being discussed.
