It's a Brand New Day for CenturyLink
July 14, 2011
Now that CenturyLink has completed its merger with Qwest, what is next for the company and for the marketplace? The media, investors, competitors and others are starting to ask me on a regular basis whether this will be successful. So far, I think CenturyLink shows a healthy growth curve and is a strong company. That is the good part.
The Opposite of CRM
July 11, 2011
Ever wonder what the opposite of CRM would be? I have. In my ruminations it's not as simple as matter and antimatter, up and down, left and right -- though few of us would consider antimatter very simple. If I gave you written directions to my house, you couldn't get home simply by turning the sheet upside down. Opposite isn't simply backward.
ISPs Agree to Mete Out Punishment for Illegal File-Sharing
July 08, 2011
Comcast, Cablevision, Verizon, AT&T and Time Warner Cable have promised to be more proactive in alerting possible copyright violators using their networks in a voluntary agreement with the music and film industries. The antipiracy model they've adopted has been pushed for some time by the Recording Industry Association of America and Motion Picture Association of America.
Sprint Nextel and Lightsquared: Uh-Oh
June 30, 2011
I have been impressed with the recovery that Sprint Nextel has shown over the last few years, but now it has struck a deal with LightSquared that puts the cart way ahead of the horse. Is Sprint making a big mistake while trying to bounce back from another body blow it just took?
FCC Aims to Get Carriers' Sticky Fingers Out of Customers' Pockets
June 22, 2011
The Federal Communications Commission has declared war on the practice of telecom carriers surreptitiously nickel-and-diming their customers through a practice called "cramming." This refers to those nagging mystery charges that pop up on many consumers' telephone bills -- some 20 million people all together, the government agency has estimated -- that range from 99 cents to $19.99 or even more.
T-Mobile Lines Up Daily Deals for Android Users
June 15, 2011
Wireless carrier T-Mobile has entered the group buying market with its own daily deal offering. Called "More for Me," the nationwide service aggregates deals from such originators as Living Social and Groupon. The service is available to anyone who owns an Android handset -- not just T-Mobile subscribers.
Skype Video-Calling Will Require Comcast Customers to Think Different About TV
June 15, 2011
A new partnership between Comcast and Skype will let Comcast subscribers place video calls through their television sets. The new service will require some setup -- customers will need to install Comcast-provided equipment including an adapter box, video camera, and special remote with a QWERTY keyboard that connects to the service.
Consumer Watchdogs Growl Over Verizon's LTE Tethering Clampdown
June 07, 2011
Consumer watchdog group Freepress is accusing Verizon of breaching the terms of its agreement to lease airwaves for its 4G LTE network. Freepress filed a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission Monday about this issue. The complaint alleges Verizon Wireless breached its lease terms by asking Google to restrict access to third-party apps on the Android Market that allow tethering.
Better Living - Anywhere on the Planet - Through Technology
June 06, 2011
Last week marked the beginning of a big experiment for me: first living and then retiring outside of the U.S. I figure there are a lot of boomers like me who are exploring this idea as we become increasingly concerned about the costs of living in our chosen country. Even thinking about living outside the U.S. would be difficult if it weren't for certain existing and emerging technologies.
Heavily Traveled Roads to Netflix Could Face Traffic Jams
May 19, 2011
If the Internet is the equivalent of our solar system, then Netflix would be Jupiter, its largest planet. That, at least, is the imagery that Sandvine evokes in its latest report, "Global Internet Phenomena Spotlight." Netflix has ascended to the No. 1 Internet traffic spot, the firm found, accounting for 29.70 percent of all peak-period downstream traffic.
Visions of Android@Home Dance in Google's Head
May 19, 2011
Let's take a peak into the future. Over the next few years, we will see the industry continue to transform itself. Industry leaders may change. We have seen that happen in the smartphone industry already. Are telephone and cable television companies next? Companies like AT&T, Verizon, Comcast, Time Warner and Cox have a target painted on them, and Google is an expert shot.
Geek Wars: Attack of the Chromes
May 16, 2011
Last week was a really interesting week. Google brought out its Windows-killer product, the Chrome OS, to generally good reviews -- but most of the folks I know who have covered the desktop for years are convinced it will fail. Google also brought out a home automation product and announced a robotic car technology, all of which could benefit from some Apple magic.
That Sound in the Distance Is Skype's Funeral Dirge
May 16, 2011
Well, it's been another exciting week here in the Linux blogosphere, not least because of all the many seismic shifts emanating from the vicinity of Redmond. There was the end of the Justice Department's antitrust oversight of Microsoft, marking the end of a historic case. There was also its wildly extravagant purchase of Skype, the implications of which still have observers reeling.
Data Caps and Web TV: Heading for a Clash?
May 06, 2011
Americans seem to love television as much as ever. But they're increasingly viewing it through non-traditional means, usually involving the Web. The number of mobile subscribers watching TV on their mobile phones, for example, increased 41 percent year over year in the fourth quarter of 2010, Nielsen has reported.
Facebook, Google May Duel for Fair Skype's Hand
May 05, 2011
Facebook and Google are both apparently considering acquisition or partnership deals with Skype. Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg reportedly has been in discussions concerning a possible purchase -- a deal that could be worth between $3 billion and $4 billion. A Skype IPO is still considered a possibility during the second half of 2011. The IPO would be expected to raise around $1 billion.
Verizon's Healthy iPhone Sales Don't Bruise AT&T
April 21, 2011
Verizon posted its first-quarter earnings on Thursday, revealing the company sold 2.2 million iPhone 4 models, Verizon's most successful launch. It activated its first iPhones on February 10, a month into the first quarter. The iPhone was previously exclusive to Verizon rival AT&T, which reported an impressive 3.6 million new Q1 iPhone activations during its first quarter, up 1 million from last year.
Level 3 Goes Out on a Limb With $3B Global Crossing Deal
April 11, 2011
Level 3 has announced plans to buy Global Crossing for $3 billion in a stock-for-stock transaction. Level 3 will also assume Global Crossing's $1.1 billion debt. This transaction creates a company with pro forma combined 2010 revenues of $6.26 billion, the companies said.
Note to TV Nets: Steer Clear of Music's Painful Path
April 07, 2011
New technology may be cool, but it can also be a double-edged sword. Different industries are starting to overlap, and even though the blending of different technologies can be very exciting, it can also be very confusing. One example is how cable television companies have been starting to use the Apple iPad and other tablet computers as a super-powered remote control.
Prepaid Wireless Has Finally Grown Up
March 24, 2011
Have you taken a look at prepaid wireless lately? I hadn't, since there is always so much noise to follow in the post-paid world and prepaid is relatively quiet, but prepaid is actually looking better and better over the last few years. Prepaid is becoming a mainstream part of the mix you should consider. In fact, it is now even better than traditional wireless for a growing percentage of users.
Sparks Likely to Fly Before AT&T Gets to Seal T-Mobile Deal
March 21, 2011
AT&T announced a deal Sunday that will make it the largest cellphone company in the U.S., surpassing Verizon. AT&T reached an agreement to acquire T-Mobile from Deutsche Telekom for about $39 billion. The deal will need approval from the FCC and DoJ to verify it would not violate antitrust laws. If approved, it could close in about a year.
