How Amazon Stole the Tablet Market
September 10, 2012
As Apple demonstrated itself with the iPod and iPad, the way to take control of a market is to redefine it around a model that favors your products. Last week, Amazon took a page from Steve Jobs' book, both in how it presented the new Kindle line and in how this line shifts the market dynamic from one that favors Apple to one that favors Amazon.
CE: Our Next Great Customer-Focused Buzzword
September 07, 2012
CRM is not itself a technology -- it's a discipline enabled by a technology. But the ideas are so completely enmeshed with technology today that it's almost impossible to talk CRM without lapsing into jargon. That's led to the abduction, abuse and expropriation of technical terms, which often results in confusion over what they actually mean.
Carrier Snapshots: Where They're At
September 06, 2012
Labor Day has come and gone, and now it's time for the big end-of-year season to begin. Expect lots of new product announcements, starting with the new Apple iPhone next week. It's all about what's new and what's coming next in wireless, telecom, television and technology. So here's a look at where several top companies stand on the growth Wave.
Windows 8: A Product Launch for the History Books
September 03, 2012
The Windows 8 launch in October promises to be like no other launch. I think it will drive home several points that many of us don't seem to understand, like the fact that we both whine there isn't enough innovation and run for the hills when someone innovates in a mature market. I think Microsoft will change a lot after this launch, and the PC ecosystem will be dramatically different.
Stop Playing Favorites, Handset Makers
August 30, 2012
C Spire Wireless vs. Verizon Wireless and AT&T Mobility sounds a lot like David vs. Goliath. Except this time Goliath holds all the cards, making it difficult for David to compete in the new 4G world. So why do Verizon and AT&T get smartphones before other carriers, anyway? This system is broken.
4 CRM Lessons to Apply as You Move to Social CRM
August 30, 2012
Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it, wrote George Santayana, and if you've covered technology as long as I have, you know that the cycles of repetition become shorter with each passing year. When it comes to CRM, we're seeing it again in the form of social CRM: companies are making the same mistakes they made at the start of the CRM era.
Don't Count on Apple to Slice Through TV's Gordian Knot
August 30, 2012
I've been an Apple product enthusiast and watcher for years, and if there's one product that I lusted after two years ago, it was a real Apple TV -- a cool HDTV with a big screen and a kickass Apple navigation system with live content and content on demand. Since then my ardor has cooled considerably.
AWS Glacier: Grinding Down the Competition?
August 29, 2012
Hardly a day goes by that one IT vendor or another fails to announce one "fastest/biggest/bestest" achievement or another, attempting to poke in the eye or drive straight into a ditch any and all previous claims. But it is ironic that some of what have become IT's most transformative solutions and services began with little, if any, braggadocio.
An Apple Judgment Today Keeps Infringement at Bay
August 28, 2012
In a heavily anticipated verdict, a jury last week found Samsung guilty of patent infringement and ordered it to pay over $1 billion to Apple. This victory for Apple in the smartphone wars is a warning to others who may desire to copy the look and feel of the Apple designs. Samsung's countersuit against Apple for infringement of wireless technologies patents was dismissed.
Has Google Crossed Over Into True Evil?
August 27, 2012
The reason we keep asking about Google and evil is because early in their existence they appeared to create a policy of not being evil. This was most unusual, but since then the invasions of privacy and moves like taking self-driving cars on the road without approval and in early testing seemed to test that definition.
Amazon Spreads Its Wings
August 23, 2012
Amazon.com is now listed number 206 in the Global 500 listing of corporations, a singularly amazing feat for a company that was created in July of 1994 by Jeff Bezos. From a business that started as an online retailer of books, because it could offer more books than the brick-and-mortar bookstores, it has certainly transformed itself into a global electronic behemoth.
Apple Fans, Welcome to the Machine
August 23, 2012
I've been an Apple Mac user since high school, using them even as I struggled through business classes on clunky PCs. As an adult, I used them in college. I have since purchased five Mac laptops and an iMac, and while I'm not a graphic artist, I've pounded on them most days of my life for years and years.
Why Verizon Was Allowed to Buy Wireless Spectrum and AT&T Wasn't
August 23, 2012
Why did Verizon Wireless just get regulator OK to acquire wireless spectrum from cable television companies, whereas AT&T got turned down in its attempt to acquire T-Mobile for the same reason? And why is it still important for regulators to solve the growing wireless data spectrum crunch? The truth is, we are running out of available wireless data spectrum.
Apple's Futuristic Flying Saucer HQ Already Out of Date
August 20, 2012
In Silicon Valley where Apple is located, burglaries are up more than 30 percent, largely because police have stopped responding to them. If you are reasonably well off, particularly if you are Asian, and you like nice stuff, the chance you'll get burglarized near Apple's new headquarters is approaching 50 percent odds. Apple employees are solidly in this demographic.
For iPhone 5, Apple Must Go Big and Skinny
August 16, 2012
The latest iPhone 5 rumors are giving it a similar form factor to the existing hot-selling iPhone 4 and 4S -- except with a bigger screen. Heck, if Apple doesn't introduce a bigger screen, it will be the biggest mistake in the history of the iPhone. Apple has to offer up a bigger screen to compete with the Android phones that have huge, gorgeous displays.
'Horrible Problems' May Be Rolling In With the Cloud
August 16, 2012
Why does Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak think cloud-based computing will bring "horrible problems" over the next few years? Sounds crazy, but to tell you the truth I think Woz is correct -- to a point. The more we transfer everything to the cloud, the less control we will have over it, according to Wozniak. That's true -- and that's just one of many issues that must be resolved before we embrace the cloud.
Open Source Still Draws Proprietary Vendors Into the Fold
August 14, 2012
VMware continued its embrace of open source software with its recent acquisition of open source and virtual network provider Nicira. The move continued VMware's aggressive M&A strategy and its effort to transition from proprietary software and virtualization to a broader market and cloud computing, largely through open source software.
SAP Innovation Day - Setting a Standard for the Next 40 Years
August 14, 2012
When SAP's five founders launched the company in June 1972, it's unlikely they foresaw where the IT industry would travel in the decades to come. SAP's core business applications, including enterprise resource planning solutions, continue to support tens of thousands of companies globally -- but how those organizations and their employees work, communicate and collaborate is changing.
The Windows 8 Generation Gap: Size Matters
August 13, 2012
I was reading James Kendrick's column on Windows 8 tablets over last week, and he is clearly having trouble adapting to what is becoming a tablet world. James and I came from the first age of personal computers. I'm pretty sure he's younger than I am, and I think he is showcasing what will be a problem for many of us who grew up on PCs. Bigger is better, and tablets aren't bigger.
Is Microsoft Bottoming Out? - Part 2
August 11, 2012
You'd think that Microsoft was all but dead, judging by some of the industry scuttlebutt. Microsoft's tactical and strategic technology and business missteps are well publicized and dissected ad infinitum. Less well documented are Microsoft's strengths -- from both a consumer and enterprise perspective -- and there are plenty of those.
