Softbank Tosses the Dice With $20B Sprint Deal
October 15, 2012
It's official. Sprint Nextel and Softbank are getting together. If the deal is approved, Softbank will own 70 percent of Sprint Nextel. That means this is not really an acquisition. Rather it is an investment. However, as a majority owner you can expect Softbank to steer the Sprint ship. This is great news for Sprint Nextel and for Softbank.
The World Post-Windows 8: Getting Better All the Time
October 15, 2012
Given that the Theme for Windows 95 Was "Start Me Up," Windows 8 likely should pull from the old Beatles hit "Getting Better." As we approach launch, it truly appears to be getting better all the time. It is clear Microsoft has been holding some things back for the launch. I've been working on a Windows 8 tablet for some months now, and I just did my first system build from scratch with Windows 8.
IBM Ratchets Up Power for the Enterprise
October 13, 2012
In commercial IT, "enterprise systems" have long been defined as the technologies that provide large organizations the highest levels of compute performance and critical attributes such as reliability, availability and scalability. But enterprise IT infrastructures have never been about technology alone.
The Channel Steps Up to the Cloud
October 12, 2012
I've been suggesting for the past few years that a more robust channel ecosystem must emerge for the cloud movement to continue to grow at its current pace. While fundamental nature of the cloud computing business creates significant challenges for traditional channel companies, rapidly rising user demand creates market pressures and opportunities that cannot be ignored.
Quit Trying to Control Your Customers
October 11, 2012
As a technology journalist, I interact with public relations professionals regularly, to the point where some firms have asked me to speak internally about what journalists are looking for from the companies they cover. Usually, these are straightforward discussions -- journalists want access and they want honesty. They want to hear a good story.
Sprint Needs More Fighting Spirit
October 11, 2012
What's next for Sprint Nextel? It has been pondering its future for years and that is its problem. It doesn't seem to realize it has to take the next step and act. Pondering is good. You want to make sure you don't make mistakes. However acting is the next step to realize your dreams, and Sprint doesn't act. It appears that is one of its big problems. Don't get me wrong. I like Sprint. I like the management, the workers and the technology. Sprint could be a great company. So why isn't it?
HP and the Uncertain Science of Corporate Rebirth
October 08, 2012
The technology market is a graveyard of companies that had potential and lost their way either to fail or be gobbled up and lose their identity. Netscape, Novell, DEC/Digital, Palm, Transmeta, ATI, ROLM, Northern Telecom, and FLIP are all names of companies that have left us as independents or completely over time. Most of these firms were high fliers once, but all of them hit hard times.
The FCC's Wireless Spectrum Band-Aid
October 04, 2012
The FCC has weighed in on the looming wireless spectrum shortage. The good news is it looks like it is going to step in with a plan for auctioning off unused television spectrum to various wireless carriers in the United States. The bad news is that even though it's only a bandage, it will take years to accomplish.
The United States of Google
October 01, 2012
I was watching "The Daily Show" the other night and Jon Stewart walked through the failures of the Obama administration, concluding that anyone who did this badly couldn't be reelected if not for the Democrats' secret weapon. He then showed Mitt Romney as that secret weapon, along with a number of troubling clips about the impressive number of mistakes Romney is making.
The Future of Comcast is on the Line
September 27, 2012
Comcast has grown and changed so much over the last 15 years that many expect this wave to continue. It may, but for that to happen Comcast must realize the marketplace is changing and steer through the upcoming rapids. Can it do that? Back in the 1990s, Comcast was a small cable television company. Back then, its competition was limited.
Dell Takes the Long View With Hyper Scale Computing
September 25, 2012
Technologically inclined businesses and other organizations have long enjoyed what I call IT "trickle down": Continuing, rapid development results in the mainstreaming of hardware, software and services that were originally unthinkably expensive and specialized. This doesn't mean that higher-end products ever disappear. In fact, the baseline performance of enterprise solutions typically ratchets ever upward.
Microsoft's Perfect Wave
September 24, 2012
Sometimes if you stand back a moment, which is what I have to do, you suddenly see broader trends, and what I'm seeing now is that the planets seem to be aligning for a Microsoft decade. However, I'm reminded that the difference between chance and luck is the difference between a hundred bucks landing in front of you unseen and your picking it up.
New iPhone? Now Hook Up With the Best Network
September 20, 2012
So, now that you're getting a new Apple iPhone, which network is best? Yesterday you didn't have to think about it, since it was only available on AT&T. Today, however, it's harder to decide. It's offered by Verizon, Sprint, C Spire and even a few prepaid carriers. So which carrier is really the best choice for you?
Dreamforce 2012: Revolution Is Out
September 20, 2012
The CRM industry is used to getting a jolt every year from Dreamforce, Salesforce.com's annual mega-event. Each year, the number of attendees swells -- this year, it's more than 70,000 -- and that makes CEO Marc Benioff's bacchanal the epicenter of the CRM industry for a week. That give Salesforce a chance to make a serious splash.
Mrs. Jobs' Smartphone
September 17, 2012
Last week at Intel's Developer Forum, I was on a panel of folks who are trying to make sure future products are better at taking into account the people they are designed for. This purpose was connected to one of the major points made by Dr. Genevieve Bell: that we should take the trouble to understand what assumptions were made by the designers of a product we intend to buy.
Navigating the Politics of the Cloud
September 15, 2012
The only topic getting more attention in the tech industry than the Cloud is the debate over the future implications of the upcoming US presidential election. And, in many ways the two topics are intimately intertwined. Both are being propelled by plenty of fear, uncertainty and doubt.
Why Cablevision Is Tweaking Its Own Nose
September 13, 2012
Cablevision recently invested in upgrading its cable television network to improve the quality of service. Now it is launching a curious marketing and advertising campaign to let customers know about it. It wants to shine up its Optimum brand. Good idea, but the funny part is, it is poking fun at itself in the process. Why -- and will it work?
Email Trashing May Cost Samsung More Than $1B
September 12, 2012
If Apple gets its way, Samsung will no longer be able to sell any cell devices that it claims infringe on Apple's patents. This could be devastating, since as of July 2012, Samsung owned 25.6 percent and Apple just 6.3 percent of the mobile market, according to a comScore report. However, the Apple v. Samsung battles will continue for quite some time.
VMworld 2012: Passing the Torch - and the Ammunition
September 11, 2012
Chief executive transitions in the IT industry often tend toward melodrama or at least bald quirkiness: The number of ignominious CEO departures at HP and Yahoo could qualify both companies for their own telenovelas. After successfully acquiring Sun Microsystems, Oracle unceremoniously booted CEO Jonathan Swartz, an event he noted by tweeting a Zen-like haiku.
Like FOSS Fog, Cloud Confusion May Not Matter
September 11, 2012
The general public knows little about the true technology fundamentals of cloud computing, suggests a recent survey commissioned by IT vendor Citrix. Almost a third of the roughly 1,000 U.S. adults polled thought cloud computing was related to weather. However, everyday people do not have to understand, appreciate or knowingly participate in a technology in order to leverage it in their lives.
