Will Tablets Revolutionize TV?
June 12, 2012
The adoption of tablets has reached critical mass in the U.S., according to comScore. In fact, one in every four smartphone owners also used a tablet during the three-month period ending April 2012. What stands out most about this particular study, though, is the link it makes between TV and online video content and the growth of tablets.
Facebook Users Aren't There to Shop Around
June 06, 2012
A new poll does not bode well for Facebook's goal of stepping up its ad revenue. Four out of five Facebook users said they were never influenced by advertising or even comments on the site to buy a product or service, found the poll, which was conducted by Reuters/Ipsos. Also, 34 percent of the users surveyed said they were spending less time on the site compared with six months ago.

Facebook Is a Fraud
May 28, 2012
I've been up to my armpits talking about Facebook for most of this month, and maybe because I'm unusually dense, just realized that Facebook is a new kind of dot-com. By this I mean its revenue and profit are based on a series of false beliefs. Unlike the first dot-coms, which failed, Facebook does have revenue and profit, but just like them it has been built on a stack of false assumptions.

Twitter Takes Privacy High Road
May 17, 2012
Twitter has made an important overture to privacy advocates: It is giving users the ability to opt out of being tracked on the service by enabling the Do Not Track feature in the Firefox browser. Ed Felten, chief technology officer for the Federal Trade Commission, broke the news at an industry event Thursday morning in New York. The company later confirmed it in a message on Twitter.
GM Steers Away From Facebook
May 16, 2012
General Motors plans to stop advertising on Facebook because the ad campaigns are not paying off in any measurable way. At $10 million, the company's ad spend on Facebook is relatively small. The reaction to GM's decision, however, has been disproportionately big. The timing of the news, of course, has much to do with the furor. Facebook is two days away from a blockbuster initial public offering.
NAD Finds Oracle's Pants on Fire
May 12, 2012
It pays to advertise, right? Not necessarily, as Oracle found out when it tangled with IBM recently over advertisements in which Oracle claimed its servers were faster and much less expensive than IBM hardware. Unlike Oracle's headline-grabbing Java copyright and patent infringement suit against Google, Big Blue didn't spend big bucks to take on Oracle in court.
MySpace Privacy Shenanigans Earn FTC Finger-Shaking

FTC Brandishes Big Legal Gun in Google Antitrust Investigation
April 27, 2012
Interest in the United States Federal Trade Commission's antitrust probe into Google was given a jolt with the commission's decision to enlist seasoned white-collar crime litigator Beth Wilkinson to head the investigation. "When we have the opportunity to augment our team by bringing on a lawyer with Beth Wilkinson's skills, judgment and experience, it is an easy decision to do so," said the FTC's Richard Feinstein.

Australian Court Hangs Blame for Deceptive Ads on Google
April 03, 2012
In Australia, a federal court ruled Tuesday that Google was guilty of breaching trade laws by hosting misleading advertisements. At issue: advertisers generating the appearance of their own ads by using the names of competitors as keywords. The court ruled that this was likely to mislead those searching for information about competing companies.
Battle for Yahoo's Board Cranks Up a Notch
March 29, 2012
It appears that Yahoo and shareholder Third Point are digging in for a contentious proxy fight. Pandora reported a 62 percent increase year-over-year in active users for its fiscal fourth-quarter, which ended Jan. 31, along with a 74 percent increase in advertising revenue and a 99 percent rise in listening hours. However, those gains were accompanied by increases in royalty payments the online radio provider had to pay to content owners, and its overall performance fell short of analyst expectations.
Yelp's Howling-Good First Day

By the end of the day, shares were trading at $24.58. The first-hour pop was surprising, even for enthusiastic advocates of the stock, said Lee Simmons, IPO industry specialist at Dun & Bradstreet.
