A few weeks ago, I read a SmartMoney article titled "10 Things Cable Companies Won't Tell You." I have to admit it was a real eye-opener. The New 'Don't Be Greedy' MVNO Business Model December 18, 2012
You're not imagining things if you're noticing more mobile network brands than ever
before. The newcomers are MVNOs -- companies that lease spectrum from major networks and resell it to end-users. It's easier than ever to escape the clutches of a cellphone contract by taking advantage of some of the contract-less deals out there.

The duo that led the Clinton-era FCC, Reed Hundt and Blair Levin, recently published a new e-book titled "The Politics of Abundance." It looks to the success of the 1990's for solutions to today's problems. They lay out a framework and a path to regenerate the kind of growth and innovation we saw during their tenure. Hundt was chairman of the Federal Communications Commission from 1993 to 1997.

Verizon's New Ad Campaign Is a Load of Half-Truths November 01, 2012
Why is Verizon Wireless telling half-truths in its latest advertising campaign? It does make the company look better than its competitors, but here's the problem: When customers realize what they're led to believe is only a half-truth, they will be very upset with Verizon. So why risk that damage to the brand and the customer relationship?

ItsOn Snags VC Funding for a la Carte Mobile Data Service October 31, 2012
Why would venture capitalist firm Andreessen Horowitz lead a $15.5 million B round of funding for a company that's been working in stealth mode since 2008 on a technology it won't showcase until 2013? Because that company, ItsOn, was cofounded by a couple of former Cisco executives, Greg Raleigh and Charles Giancarlo.

Escaping the Clutches of a Cellphone Contract October 30, 2012
Wireless carriers are putting more energy into prepaid. It's a normal evolution. As quality phones became cheaper, prepaid brands like Sprint's Boost and Virgin Mobile have been able to offer better phones -- even a selection of smartphones, including the iPhone. Those better products, along with the availability of 4G network speeds, have increased prepaid demand.

Roam Control Could Muscle You Out of a Tight Spot October 26, 2012
Minimal signal bars? In the middle of nowhere? Your phone should automatically roam

doesn't -- the phone can appear biased towards your home network. I've been looking at Roam Control, an Android app -- not available in Google Play -- that lets you force your phone to roam.

Foreigners Gobbling Up American Pie October 25, 2012
If Sprint Nextel closes its deal with Japan-based Softbank, then more of the good old-fashioned American wireless telephone industry will be subject to foreign control -- three out of the top four wireless carriers in the U.S., in fact, will have their headquarters overseas.
