AT&T Makes Video-Streaming Splash January 07, 2013
AT&T has announced a new service to compete with such video-on-demand offerings as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. The service is aimed at its U-verse customers, offering unlimited access to AT&T's library of some 1,500 movies from a TV, computer or wireless device. It will cost $5 a month, a price that is competitive with, if not undercutting, its rivals.

Hulu Honcho to Hit the Road January 07, 2013
Hulu CEO Jason Kilar bid a fond adieu to the company's employees, announcing in a blog post Friday that he and CTO Rich Tom will be leaving at some point during Q1 2013. Kilar made no mention of the reasons for their departures, other than to say, "Rich and I have been fortunate to build and innovate alongside each other these past 5+ years and our plan is to do more of that on the road ahead."

Zynga Gets Rid of Some of Its Dogs January 02, 2013
Zynga has closed down 11 of its social games this week, including PetVille, Mafia Wars 2, Vampire Wars and Mafia Wars Shakedown. Some of the titles were completely shut down, while others were pulled from app stores or simply stopped accepting new players.

Google Unloads Motorola Set-Top Business December 20, 2012
Google announced Thursday that it was selling its Motorola Mobility set-top box division, Motorola Home, to Arris Group for $2.35 billion. The deal, which has been approved by the boards of both companies, is expected to close by the second half of next year. Under the terms of the agreement, Google will receive $2.05 billion in cash, along with $300 million in Arris shares.

Google's Cloud Is Alive With the Sound of Free Music December 18, 2012
Google announced Tuesday that it is extending its Scan and Match feature for its online locker service to the U.S. Users with Google Play accounts will get a message asking if they would like Google to scan their hard drives for music. If it finds a match in its own library, Google will add the song to the user's online music collection.

Video Game Market Sees Pallid November December 10, 2012
Video games, often a hot seller during the holiday season, are seeing softer sales this year. That's according to data released by NPD Group that shows video game sales down 11 percent for the month of November, compared to sales figures from the same period last year. Sales for November totaled $2.55 billion in the video game category, which is down from $2.87 billion for the month of November 2011.

YouTube Wants to Be Your Must-See TV December 08, 2012
Google has restyled its YouTube page to make it easier for viewers to keep up with channel subscriptions. The redesign builds on last year's introduction of a Guide on the home page. Google is now displaying the YouTube Guide across all devices.

Zynga Hitches Its Wagon to Online Gambling December 06, 2012
Social game developer Zynga has taken a step toward another type of gaming, having filed preparatory paperwork in Nevada to offer real-money gambling games in the United States, according to reports. The Nevada Gaming Control Board confirmed that Zynga filed an application Tuesday for a preliminary finding of suitability to hold a gaming license in the state.

Pandora Slides Toward Fiscal Cliff December 05, 2012
Speculation about Pandora's future is running high again with the company's release of its Q3 earnings and, more importantly, guidance for the fourth quarter and fiscal year 2013. For the third quarter of fiscal 2013, Pandora posted total revenue of $120 million, a 60 percent year-over-year increase. Advertising revenue was $106.3 million, a 61 percent year-over-year increase.

Icahn Sets the Earth Trembling Under Netflix November 01, 2012
Billionaire investor and activist shareholder Carl Icahn has acquired a 10 percent stake in Netflix, according to a Wednesday filing with the SEC. The value of the 5.5 million shares is about $169 million. Icahn Capital believes that Netflix is undervalued and positioned for expansion both in the U.S. and overseas, according to the filing.
