DoJ Tosses Monkey Wrench Into Sprint-Softbank Merger Plans January 30, 2013
Citing national security concerns, the Justice Department on Tuesday asked the FCC to put the brakes on the pending Sprint-Softbank merger. The DoJ, FBI and DHS are reviewing the buy for national security, law enforcement and public safety concerns, according to a letter Justice sent to the FCC.

The USPS is hosting a pilot project with the goal of simplifying the account ID process for all federal agencies. One possible solution: allowing citizens to use their existing e-commerce accounts to access agency websites. While electronic mechanisms enable federal agencies to provide some online government services, the process is burdensome for citizens and agencies, USPS said.

HP Horns In on the Chromebook Action January 29, 2013
The brief appearance of a spec sheet on HP's online shopping website Monday seemed to indicate the company has joined the list of Microsoft partners offering Chromebooks. The sheet listed details of the HP Pavilion Chromebook 14-c010us PC and carried an advertisement embargo date of Feb. 17. It may have been placed on the Web by accident, but it's also possible it was a marketing ploy.

Microsoft reported an earnings slip in its second fiscal quarter on Thursday, despite strong sales from its Windows 8 operating system that gave overall revenue a boost. It brought in $21.46 billion in revenue, a 3 percent increase from the same period a year ago. However, its net income of $6.4 billion was down from the $6.6 billion posted in the year-ago quarter.

Dish Network has asked the U.S. Federal Communications Commission to pause its review of Softbank's proposed $20.1 billion acquisition of Sprint while the two companies battle over their bids to buy Clearwire.
