RIM's Slow Crawl Toward the Fast Lane
March 29, 2012
Research In Motion has said it will offer app makers a prototype of the next smartphone in the BlackBerry 10 line at an upcoming conference in May. Good news, but is it too little, too late? The phone will not be ready to roll into the market till late 2012. RIM ruled during the last decade, but it has fallen way back since the iPhone and Androids hit the streets a few years ago.
10 Tips for Smooth Landings
March 28, 2012
Effective landing pages are an essential component of successful online marketing campaigns and are probably the single biggest factor in determining whether or not you will convert a Web visitor into a prospect who is willing to provide contact information. Landing pages are custom-designed single Web pages a visitor arrives at after clicking on a link or advertisement.
Shepherding Content to a New E-Commerce Platform
March 17, 2012
Following a stellar 2011 holiday season, and with U.S. retail sales having exceeded expectations in February, etailers have many reasons for optimism in 2012 and beyond. By any measure, e-commerce will continue to grow -- Goldman Sachs most recently predicted that global retail Web sales will reach nearly $1 trillion by 2013.
Online Retailers, Listen Up: Tips for Delighting Shoppers
March 02, 2012
The Internet has become the world's largest shopping mall, and the market is continuing to grow. Q4 2011 U.S. retail ecommerce sales were up 14 percent compared with 2010, reaching nearly $50 billion for the quarter, ComScore recently reported. Total U.S. e-commerce sales are projected to reach $279 billion by 2014, according to a Forrester forecast. Moreover, the tablet has emerged as a lucrative shopping device.
Timeline May Eat Up Companies' Time
March 01, 2012
Facebook introduced a long-expected development on Wednesday: Timeline for Pages -- that is, Timeline for brands. It is similar in look and feel and function to the feature that was pushed out to user profiles last fall. However, the implications of Timeline for Pages are much greater for brands, both in outreach to customers and in terms of the additional resources that must be now devoted to Facebook.
FCC Action Zaps Robocalls
February 16, 2012
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has put in place tougher restrictions regarding prerecorded telemarketing calls, aka "robocalls." In a 3-0 vote, the commissioners agreed on four ways to limit the automated marketing calls, which often irritate users of residential and cellphone lines.
Content Intent, Part 3
February 11, 2012
The dissemination of content throughout the Web has forced companies and marketing firms to rethink how they advertise. The swell of venues that are housing content has dueling effects: It increases the potential reach of an advertisement but also dilutes the customer pool for the original publisher.
Content Intent, Part 2
February 03, 2012
It can be a little tricky talking about how and why media outlets allow, and indeed encourage, the diffusion of their content throughout the Web. For starters, people tend to be tightlipped about this strategy. No one from CNN, Fox News, MSNBC or Viacom agreed to speak on the record for this article. They are, apparently, much less eager to discuss sharing content than they are to actually share it.
Content Intent, Part 1
January 27, 2012
As far as exclusive interviews go, you could do a lot worse than getting Herman Cain, and a lot worse than getting him on Nov. 28. That was, after all, the day that a woman unleashed accusations of a 13-year affair with Cain, the third racy allegation levied against Cain in a matter of weeks. And those charges were but part of the Cain saga. There was also the Nov. 15 Libya gaffe...
Blackbaud Gears Up for Next Enterprise CRM Release
January 20, 2012
This was a big week for the Nasdaq-listed Blackbaud: The company announced its plans to acquire Convio, which offers a fund-raising application for nonprofits, for $275 million. The feature sets of the Convio application and Blackbaud's CRM software for the nonprofit space are complementary, to a large degree. The newly acquired technology will help Blackbaud further develop its user base.
The Data-Driven Digital Revolution
December 28, 2011
Traditionally, online advertising was viewed primarily as a direct-response vehicle. However, the growing use of data to define and deliver audience targeting means it now can have an impact on all levels of the purchasing funnel -- from fostering awareness to reaching consumers at the ideal intersection between desire, intent and action.
IBM's Tech Predictions Prompt Deep Thoughts, Chuckles
December 20, 2011
IBM looked into its crystal ball and saw five technologies becoming ubiquitous in the next five years. While IBM spends most of its time, effort and intelligence in the innards of big organizations, the five technologies it sees on the horizon are very personal. For example, we'll be able to use our own motion, as well as motion around us, to harness energy. IBM imagines extending this concept to running water.
Backlash Against Amazon Price Check Builds Steam
December 10, 2011
A backlash is growing against an app designed to help consumers scope out products at local stores, compare them to similar goods on Amazon -- and then leave the stores empty-handed to make their actual purchases online. Critics of the app, called "Amazon Price Check," include brick-and-mortar retailers and Maine Sen. Olympia Snowe.
Fear Factor: The ICANN Domain Revolt
November 22, 2011
The flash mob dance by the world's most powerful groups of agencies against ICANN's new gTLD domain name program must not be taken lightly. After all, these global bodies represent the real manipulaters of emotions. They influence our taste, habits and behavior -- like type of cereal, length of skirts and width of ties. Commercials and reality shows teach us how to role play in cubicles or dance at weddings.
Businesses Get a Place in the Google+ Sun
November 08, 2011
Google has introduced Google+ Pages, an element of its Google+ social network that has been much anticipated by corporate brands. Pages provides a public placeholder on the Google+ network for any entity -- not just companies. A sports club like FC Barcelona, for example, could have its own page. Or a band -- such as alternative music group The All-American Rejects. Anderson Cooper 360 is another early adopter.
Google's Algorithm Dance: No Fancy Footwork for Quality Publishers
November 04, 2011
Google is introducing a change to its search algorithm that will impact some 35 percent of searches on the Internet. The end goal of the massive shift is to encourage publishers to keep content as fresh as possible, especially as it relates to recent news and events that are regularly updated.
How Much for That ICANN gTLD?
October 25, 2011
Is $185,000 the right price for a single generic top-level domain? No, it's definitely not. If a gTLD is supposed to provide worldwide exclusive use of a name identity with unlimited sub-name-brand-extension-domains, this amount is insufficient for ICANN to add critical features to the same application process.
The Quick Demise of Qwikster
October 13, 2011
The superstar movie rental giant Netflix rapidly graduated to movie streaming and suddenly splintered off its old-fashioned DVD-by-mail service to create "Qwikster," a separate division with a name identity inspired by the likes of "Twitter" and "Napster," etc. When the outcry of customers reached the boardroom, wisdom kicked in. Qwikster was quickly withdrawn.
iPad's the Mobile Device Superhighway for Web Traffic
October 12, 2011
Mobile devices are generating a growing portion of Internet traffic, according to comScore, with much of it coming from iPads and iPhones. comScore quantifies the Web traffic driven specifically by smartphones and tablets at 6.8 percent. Of that 6.8 percent, two-thirds come from mobile devices and one-third from tablets.
The True Nature of Marketing Automation
September 23, 2011
Marketing automation is not science. It is a badly coined term that describes the automation of push marketing. The name is often associated with a class of cloud software that helps marketing become more efficient and effective. Marketing automation is simply software waiting for someone to apply science to it. So if marketing automation is not science, what is it?
