January 29, 2013

The company reported net income of $272.3 million, or 23 cents per share, down from the $295.6 million, or 24 cents per share that it reported the same time a year ago.
Unlocking Cellphones Is Now Illegal, but You'll Be Forgiven
January 28, 2013
It is now illegal to unlock a cellphone, thanks to a decision late last year by the Library of Congress that went into effect on Saturday. That decision eliminated an exemption to the DMCA that gave users the right to legally unlock a device in order to use a different provider's network.
Headless Commerce Lets the Product Sell Itself
January 26, 2013
If done right, online selling of digital content -- including software, games, e-books, periodicals and other digital media -- can take traditional retail e-commerce a huge step further into a new and very different -- but potentially highly impactful -- sales and relationship-building environment. Unlike physical goods e-commerce, selling digital content should happen in the context of life.

The initial base station will be deployed on Google's campus in Mountain View, Calif. It appears the company intends to build a dense, hyperspeed wireless network.
RIM Releases BYOD-Friendly IT Management Software
January 23, 2013
Research In Motion released a new version of its BlackBerry Enterprise Service mobile device management software on Wednesday. This comes just over a week before the official launch of the new BlackBerry 10 OS and compatible handsets, and just days after RIM CEO Thorsten Heins suggested the company might abandon the hardware market and sharpen its focus on software.
AT&T Wheels and Deals to Fend Off Spectrum Squeeze
January 22, 2013
AT&T has reached an agreement with Atlantic Tele-Network to buy its wireless assets for $780 million. The deal will add approximately 585,000 subscribers -- mainly in Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, North Carolina, Ohio and South Carolina -- to AT&T's user ranks. Perhaps more importantly, AT&T's acquisition of the Alltel brand will bring in spectrum complementary to AT&T's network.
The Web Flows Into Cuba but Nothing Flows Out
January 22, 2013
Cuba has activated an underwater cable that could alter the nation's Internet landscape -- but its impact would be greater if the cable were turned on all the way. The long-awaited cable reportedly is only facilitating incoming -- not outgoing -- Web traffic.
RIM May Scotch BlackBerry Hardware
January 22, 2013
CEO Thorsten Heins has suggested that Research In Motion may one day license its BlackBerry operating system and stop producing handset hardware. Whether such a move would help put the embattled company back on track or be the final step in a march to oblivion -- much like the path Palm took just two years ago -- is the question.

Browse any mobile app store and you'll find a number of apps relating to monitoring activity and tracking fitness while you work out and train. Shelf space is increasingly dedicated to fitness-related gadgets including activity monitors and other workout gear. Now there are massively multiplayer-style games to complement the fitness games published for console games.
Keys to Successful Mobile CRM
January 22, 2013
Mobile CRM is usually not a company's first foray into CRM. Before going mobile, a company usually has a SaaS-based CRM application, at a bare minimum, as well as an online presence that has become increasingly interactive over the years -- and likely a social media presence as well. Mobile CRM has quickly become a must-have for many firms, though.
Securing BYOD Access With Single Sign-on
January 19, 2013
For enterprises, the collision of the mobile revolution with the cloud revolution represents a security train wreck. Tablets and smartphones are quickly becoming the productivity tool of choice for executives, sales professionals and remote workers. However, BYOD is making it difficult for IT departments to enforce security policies on private and public cloud applications accessed from personal devices.
When Apple Met China
January 19, 2013
Apple CEO Tim Cook recently wrapped up his second trip to China in less than a year. While there, he met with regulators, declared that China would become Apple's biggest market, and talked shop with the nation's No. 1 mobile carrier, China Mobile. Apple has something of an identity crisis in China.
Dish Meddles With Sprint-Softbank Merger
January 18, 2013
Dish Network has asked the U.S. Federal Communications Commission to pause its review of Softbank's proposed $20.1 billion acquisition of Sprint while the two companies battle over their bids to buy Clearwire. Dish contended in a filing this week that the FCC's review of Softbank's acquisition is "unripe for consideration" since full ownership of Clearwire has not yet been established.
Facebook Rolls Out Free Voice Calling to US iPhone Users
January 17, 2013
Facebook rolled out free voice calling in the U.S. through the Facebook Messenger app for iPhone on Wednesday -- with little fanfare or formality. There was no grand announcement -- media outlets noticed the new development and after inquiries, Facebook said it was an extension of the VoIP in Messenger test it launched earlier this year in Canada.
Can BB10 Rescue RIM?
January 17, 2013
One of two things will happen with the upcoming launch of the brand new RIM BlackBerry 10. Either it will be a success and help RIM get back on a growth curve, or it will end up being like the Palm Pre, loved by the media and analysts yet wanting for sales. Can RIM recover with BlackBerry 10? It's possible. But the company must do two things right.
iPhone Hysteria: Where Is Occam's Razor When You Need It?
January 17, 2013
When I saw the various reports that have been swirling around Apple create a perfect storm of stock-dropping backlash, I shrugged them off. First, Apple was rumored to have reduced its orders for iPhone screens, maybe even as much as 42 percent. Shake that with a little Apple-has-lost-its-cool hysteria, and oh boy, Apple's stock has been a roller-coaster ride.
BB10 Buzz: Brilliant Marketing or Boom Goes the Dynamite?
January 16, 2013
Just days away from Research In Motion's Jan. 30 launch of the BlackBerry 10 platform, which includes a new operating system and a fresh lineup of phones, the advertising machine has yet to churn into action. That doesn't mean RIM isn't busy building buzz, however. Several press releases have fueled news stories, tweets and mentions across social media.

January 16, 2013
Spooked by reports that Apple is cutting its iPhone 5 orders, many investors unloaded their Apple stock this week, sending the price dipping to its lowest point in nearly a year. The company did not confirm the reports that first appeared in The Wall Street Journal, but several analysts have also cut estimates on iPhone sales for the quarter.
Google's Schmidt Pitches Android to Chinese Devs
January 15, 2013
Fresh off his trip to North Korea -- and right behind Apple CEO Tim Cook's trip to China -- Google chairman Eric Schmidt joined a panel discussion at the "Geek Park" conference in Beijing. Schmidt reportedly reminded the developers in attendance that despite Apple's popularity in China -- the iPhone 5 sold more than 2 million units in one weekend -- Android is still the top dog in the Middle Kingdom.
