Is the Chatroulette Sleazefest Giving Video Chat a Bad Name?

It's a good bet that when "The Daily Show's" Jon Stewart spends six minutes making uber-ironic fun of a particular trend or topic, it's pretty much arrived as a legitimate Mainstream Media Phenomenon. Such was the case recently with Stewart's hilarious deconstruction of Chatroulette the Web site that facilitates random video chat conversations.

Just as Skype devotees use the Voice over Internet Protocol service to talk to friends and family anywhere in the world, Verizon Wireless used Skype Tuesday to send a loud message of its own to Apple, AT&T and the rest of the competition: We can play the VoIP game too. Beginning in March, Verizon said, the wireless carrier will offer a full suite of Skype mobile services on nine of its smartphones.

Alcatel-Lucent's Bell Labs on Monday launched Green Touch, a project aimed at making communications networks 1,000 times more more energy-efficient. The project's founding members include service providers such as AT&T; research labs such as the MIT Research Lab for Electronics and Bell Labs; and government and nonprofit research institutions such as the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control.
