Cloud Insecurity: Not Enough Tools, Experience or Transparency
April 18, 2012
It may be that the hype around cloud computing has settled, but security concerns continue to make headlines and are often cited by CIOs as top priorities. CompTIA's latest trends study found that while many U.S. companies trust the cloud enough to use it, only 13 percent trust it enough for heavy lifting.
Greenpeace Lambastes Apple, Amazon, Microsoft for Creating Foul Clouds
April 17, 2012
Behind every cloud there supposedly is a silver lining, but a new report from Greenpeace, titled "How Clean Is Your Cloud?" may mean stormy weather for Apple, Amazon and Microsoft. The three tech giants use "dirty" energy to power their data centers, Greenpeace said. It looked at 14 of the largest tech companies' data centers and offered assessments of how much power they required, as well as what type of energy they used.

The exponential growth of data from a widening array of sources is making the term "Big Data" a hot topic among corporate executives from businesses of all sizes across nearly every industry. The Big Data phenomenon is being fueled by new social networks, mobile devices and increasingly powerful applications that can apture every keystroke and convert it into valuable information.
Thin Clients Alive and Kicking
April 10, 2012
In the years since thin client computing arrived on the IT scene, it has been pronounced dead, only to arise again more often than Jason in the "Friday the 13th" film franchise. That's not due to any quality of its underlying architecture. In fact, thin client engineering is often elegant in the extreme and makes clever use of au courant mainstream technologies. What does this have to do with Dell's recently proposed acquisition of Wyse?
The Cloud's Booming Potential for the Networked Economy
April 09, 2012
It's impossible to factor the implications of cloud computing without examining the context of all the other major business and technology trends in play today. To gauge the potential business benefits -- and threats -- from cloud, we also need to examine the confluence of these developments and how together they change businesses and business ecosystems.
Making the Most of Chrome in the Cloud
April 05, 2012
I've got a mini-laptop hooked up to my TV, a larger laptop on my desk, a 7-inch tablet in my back pocket for reading at coffee shops, a 10-incher that floats around the loft and rarely goes outside, and a 4.3-inch smartphone that works well on crowded transportation systems -- all lacking in synchronicity.

Worldwide enterprise applications leader SAP has designed and implemented a private cloud infrastructure model that supports an internal consulting and training program. By standardizing on a VMware cloud platform, SAP has been able to slash provisioning times for multiple instances of its flagship application suite in the training setting, as well as set the stage for wider adoption of cloud models.

The Proper Care and Feeding of Highly Virtualized Environments
March 26, 2012
Advanced and pervasive virtualization and cloud computing trends are driving the need for a better, holistic approach to IT support and remediation. And while the technology to support and fix virtualized environments is essential, it's the people, skills and knowledge to manage these systems that provide the most decisive determinants of ongoing performance success.
Microsoft Dynamics ERP Is Bound for Azure Glory
March 26, 2012
Microsoft is stepping up its cloud strategy, with the announcement that it will port its Microsoft Dynamics enterprise resource planning software to Windows Azure this year. The company outlined plans for the transition at Convergence 2012, held last week in Houston. Dynamics NAV 2013 and Dynamics GP 2013, optimized for small and mid-sized businesses, will be added to Azure in the fourth quarter of 2012.
The Insurgents and the Status Quo
March 21, 2012
If you read Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson, you get a good sense of the rivalry between Jobs and Bill Gates and Microsoft, or between Apple and the rest of the world more generally. But the rivalries were really between that past/present -- and the future -- and Jobs and Gates were only playing parts that were scripted long ago. The play's outlines are of insurgent new ideas against the status quo.

"This is a custom managed service targeted at companies in the enterprise space as opposed to the mid- sized space," said Avaya's Ed Nalbandian.
It's ASP All Over Again
March 14, 2012
One of my favorite Mark Twain quotes is, "History doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes." I thought of it again last week when I read about the price war going on in the Infrastructure as a Service space. Larry Dignon made the clever observation that he paid more for electricity in January than it cost to get IT infrastructure now that Microsoft and Amazon have decided to double down on the infrastructure game.
