The Day Canonical Pushed Kubuntu Out of the Nest
February 13, 2012
Linux fans have had a hard enough time watching the ongoing woes of Mandriva in recent months, so when the news hit last week that Kubuntu was under threat as well, it just felt like too much. "Today I bring the disappointing news that Canonical will no longer be funding my work on Kubuntu after 12.04," wrote developer Jonathan Riddell in a message to Kubuntu developers.
The Trouble With Mandriva
February 09, 2012
Now that Linux distributions like Ubuntu and Mint are enjoying such widespread attention and success, it's increasingly difficult to remember that not all distros are sharing in the same good fortune. Take Mandriva, for example. This venerable distro dates back to 1998, when it was born as Mandrake Linux, but its last few years have been tempestuous.

Will the Spark Tablet Ignite a FOSS Fire?
February 06, 2012
Now that webOS is making its merry way along the open road, there's no telling what tablets or other mobile devices it may inspire over the upcoming months. In the meantime, the Linux world is all abuzz over what promises to be the very first fully open tablet out there: the Spark, a device slated to ship in May from none other than the KDE Plasma Active community itself.
WebOS Swings Along the Open Road
February 02, 2012
When HP announced late last year that it would open source webOS, it was hard not to be skeptical. After all, it would be all too easy for a company to whitewash its own abandonment of a project by grandly "donating it to the community." However, that pessimistic view is beginning to fade, thanks to HP's publication last month of an official road map for its webOS plans.
Ubuntu's New 'HUD' Factor: A Step Forward or Back?
January 30, 2012
Some of us here in the Linux blogosphere may have hoped for a quieter 2012 than 2011 turned out to be, but so far at least, it doesn't look like we're getting our wish. January appears to have started the year off with a bang. Do we get a little break now that it's the end of the month? No, we don't, thanks to the arrival of Ubuntu's "HUD."
FOSS' Factious Gender Divide
January 26, 2012
There's no denying that the FOSS community has many virtues, but gender equality doesn't seem to be one of them. Gender-related issues and tensions have plagued the FOSS world for as long as many of us can remember, and the problem has already been picked apart on these pages time, time and time again. Well guess what? It's still a problem.

Windows 8 Secure Boot - or How Microsoft Is Riling Up the Linux Masses
January 23, 2012
What a difference a week makes. It was just the other day that Linux bloggers were celebrating the news from researcher Net Applications that desktop Linux had surged in popularity in recent months. Now, the mood in the blogosphere has plummeted once again as a result of the latest developments on the Windows 8 front.
All Hail Debian, King of the Web Server World
January 19, 2012
There's nothing like a popularity contest to elicit a wide array of opinions, but recently an example appeared in the Linux blogosphere that seems to be something of an exception. "Debian is now the most popular Linux distribution on web servers," proclaimed W3Techs in a blog post. For the most part, Linux geeks appeared to be largely in agreement. Could this be a historic first?

The Surprisingly Juicy Desktop Linux Market Share Report
January 16, 2012
There's no doubt the Linux world has seen its share of good news over the past year or so, but every once in a while a tidbit comes along that calls for a little extra fanfare. Case in point: Recent data from research firm Net Applications suggests that desktop Linux's market share has jumped considerably over the past few months.
Mint With Cinnamon: A New Sweet Spot for Desktop Linux?
January 12, 2012
Well CES is nearing its conclusion for another year, winding down an event that may well have brought Linux more mainstream attention than any other in the show's four-decades-long history. Ubuntu had its share of the limelight, but it's another Linux distro entirely that's captured many bloggers' attention. Linux Mint, that is -- and its tantalizing new desktop environment, Cinnamon.

New Legal Challenge - Who Owns Followers on Twitter?
January 11, 2012
On Jan. 1, I found that these Twitter names had hordes of followers: @ladygaga had 17,554,645, @Starbucks had 1,927,255, and @noahkravitz had 24,273. If you have a Twitter account, you can easily see all of who the followers are. Having Twitter followers doesn't mean you get to keep them, though. Followers can unfollow on their own. Or, an employer might try to claim the followers belong to it.
All Eyes on Ubuntu as CES Draws Near
January 09, 2012
"The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious," a very wise man once said, and that's surely as true in the tech world as it is in the rest of life. Maybe that's why so many have been so intrigued by Canonical's cryptic announcement last week about its plans for this week's CES event.

Going All-FOSS With a New Computer
January 05, 2012
Linux bloggers' New Year's resolutions tend to be many and varied in any given year, but one most can surely agree upon is the desire to outfit a new PC with nothing but free software. That sentiment was anticipated over at Computeractive UK, which published a compelling little story along those lines back in December. "I want to use only free software on my new PC. Where do I start?" the piece began.
2012 Plans and Dreams From the Linux Blogs and Beyond
January 03, 2012
Well 2012 has arrived at last, and not a moment too soon! Not only can we finally dispense with all the holiday festivities, but we can also say goodbye to a year that was far too tempestuous for comfort. Here's hoping that 2012 will be a lot less exciting here in the technology world! Of course, one last obligation still to be fulfilled on this cusp of the new year is the making of resolutions.

WebOS: Destined to Fail, or Fuel for FLOSS' Fire?
December 19, 2011
After such a tempestuous year as 2011 has been, it's hard to imagine a more dramatic way for it to go out with a "bang" than with HP's recent announcement about webOS. Yes, for those who missed it, HP finally ended months of indecision by announcing that it plans to open-source the Linux-based mobile operating system, thereby giving it a chance at a new life in the hands of the community.
2011's Tribulations and Triumphs for FOSS
December 15, 2011
Well December is halfway over for another year, and that means 2011 is drawing to a close. It's been a tempestuous year, most would surely agree, and one that wrought momentous change in this already fast-paced industry of ours. Which were the biggest, most monumental events here in the world of FOSS, you ask? Ask four different Linux bloggers and you'll get four different answers.
