See Full StoryI've been trying to imagine what the computing universe will look like in late 2008. The exercise not only highlighted the degree to which Linux has become the focal point for anti-Microsoft feeling, but also underscored the risk that the Linux community now faces from commercialization. My belief is that Unix -- whether as Linux, BSD or Solaris -- will dominate the desktop everywhere except in the United States by the time 2008 rolls around.

I imagine the view from CA is different from US, but I hear daily from CFO's now as well as CTO's about the ways they want to implement Linux solutions in response to the evolving MS crisis.
That's correct, these 'C' level managers view the licensing scheme of MS as a 'crisis', particularly when viewed from a long term financial basis.
I was that MCSE, DBA, CCIE wannabe who discovered that *nix simply did more, in a massively more secure environment, so I switched my department and have poisoned the waters for MS ever since. But these $ concerns come unbidden, and rather unexpected. We make more from MS, but we love supporting *nix because deployment is far more cost effective. In the end, business always follows that trend.

Excellent article, Paul.....
you may need one more pair of glasses......so you can see osX! We dumped all our pc's, kepted some linux boxes, but now have osX servers and osX clients. The stuff just works, and is very cost effective!
