Your logo is not that important these days, as most customers have no motivation to remember the subtle intricacies or bizarre approaches to logos that are intended to stimulate demand. They are already flooded with colorful graphic look-alikes and continuously regenerated blasts from every corner. Today's customers are in need of a simple name to follow and remember until the next time a need arises. Names have replaced logos and have dramatically changed the rules of corporate and product branding.
I understand the point of view the commentator is expressing. By itself, a logo does not automatically insure success of a business. The business must meet a consumer need in a way that makes it stand out from others.
But to say a company logo is "not all as important" takes away from the connection many consumers have with a company. The golden arches of McDonalds, The typeface used for IBM, the "swish" of Nike and the distinctive lettering of Coca-Cola speak to the power of a well-crafted and executed design. A letter with only the symbol of the Playboy bunny will find its way to the right business. Show someone Apple's logo and you immediate sense something is different about the way they do business.
Every company should continually evaluate how its logo fares in the marketplace. But let's not forget that for many comsumers, your logo is the first thing they see. Good graphic design always matters.
