As if the shipping riddle weren't hard enough for e-tailers to solve, the world has added
an almost unimaginable degree of difficulty in recent days. Once a benign and even welcome
part of the day, the mail and door-to-door deliveries have increasingly become the focus
of anxiety and in some cases, outright fear.

I am concerned! I am an internet merchant that ships almost entirely through the US Postal Service. I also am a resident on the east coast not far from the nation's capital. How do I feel safe and comfortable with the current situation and in turn how do I reassure my customers? I refuse to hide with my head in the sand, but what constitutes judicious concern and what constitutes reckless abandon? Do I revert to more costly and less convenient services? If I send an email to my customers that a package is coming via the USPS, am I heightening their anxiety or providing them a valuable service?

Any help in how to deal with this conundrum would be appreciated. This Virginian finds himself in need of some guidance.

Mr. Regan asked: "What about a heads-up alert from the e-tailer itself?" That's exactly what would happen if packages were delivered to a *smart* home-based delivery box that tracks "who delivered what and when". But more than providing an audit trail, such boxes will significantly increase consumer-direct sales.
