Re: The iPhone Tether's Gordian Knot

I've wanted a tethering option for my iPhone since 2007, when I waited in line to buy an EDGE-based first-generation iPhone. I upgraded to the iPhone 3G, of course, and I'm still wanting and waiting for tethering. Why? Because I'm the kind of customer who is just mobile enough to need Internet access for my laptop several times a year in places that aren't WiFi handy -- but not often enough to make shelling out for a dedicated USB dongle and service plan worthwhile.

The tethering option is enabled in Canada by Rogers/Fido and works a charm. At present it is part of one's data consumption with no additional charge if you stay within your plan.

AT & T is clearly a stone age corporation and I pity my American brothers and sisters who are waiting for this feature.

AT&T started way behind the curve.

AT&T had to spend several billion dollars merely to bring up its network to EDGE speeds for the first iPhone and it has been running as fast as it can to catch up. I suspect that it will always be behind the curve until its LTE network is complete.

Even so, it would be foolish of Apple to produce a CDMA phone for Verizon. It would be very expensive to get through the regulatory gauntlet and be of such a short life span. Apple is better off waiting several years for an LTE iPhone; It will have enough problems supplying demand for its GSM world phones.

Astounding

It amazes me that Apple, with the best customer service in the US, has paired up with AT&T, a company with the worst customer in the US except for Comcast.

You really need to compare the 3G coverage provided by Verizon with the 3G service map of AT&T. AT&T covers nearly nothing.

This became very evident to me when I drove from DC to Nashville, TN. Large stretches of no coverage, and where there is coverage, it is Edge (2G).

In southwest Virginia there is only Edge, with one exception, Blacksburg, near the Virginia Tech campus. I guess AT&T knows that people driving down I-81 will take what they can get, but get 12-15 miles off I-18 and college students wouldn't stand for it.

For the longest time, I had both Verizon and AT&T (Cingular). Yes, there are places, like central Ohio where Verizon has no coverage, but for the most point, Verizon really outpaces AT&T.

The worst part is AT&T doesn't even care when their coverage goes away near existing cell sites.

I will upgrade my iPhone the INSTANT there is an iPhone on ANY other network.
