A day after posting disappointing quarterly earnings, Groupon ousted its founder and CEO Andrew Mason. The company's stock jumped 4 percent in after-hours trading as the news became public. "I've decided that I'd like to spend more time with my family. Just kidding -- I was fired today. If you're wondering why... you haven't been paying attention," Mason said in a letter to employees. He expressed regret that he didn't follow his intuition at certain times.

Facebook users will soon see ads in their feeds that are more specifically targeted to what they like and where they've shopped -- both online and offline -- thanks to a series of agreements with data companies announced Wednesday. The agreements expand the social network's Custom Audiences program released last September, which was designed to allow advertisers to target their existing customers via Facebook.

Several years ago, General Motors introduced a groundbreaking service called "OnStar," a wireless technology designed to keep drivers safer on the road. Since the 1990s, GM has used the Verizon Wireless network to link cars with OnStar.
However, it announced this week at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona that it's switching to AT&T Mobility. This is pretty big news.

Samsung opened up its new Wallet app at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona Wednesday, joining Apple and Google in the market for electronic storage and scanning of tickets, memberships and discounts via smartphones. The company's announcement comes two days after it said it had entered a worldwide agreement with Visa to offer the latter's PayWave near field communication payment system.

The Center for Copyright Information is ready to start implementing the Copyright Alert System, it said Monday. Under the system, content partners, such as music and movie producers, will alert participating ISPs of alleged P2P copyright infringement by their customers. The ISPs will then forward those copyright alerts to the supposed offenders.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer needs all employees close as she tries to fix the ailing company's problems. That means beginning in June, Yahoo employees who have been able to work from home will be asked to head back into the office, according to a company human resources memo. Some of Yahoo's most important "communication and collaboration" come from impromptu meetings, discussions between employees and meeting new people around the office, the memo said.

That trend will probably continue, suggests a new report released Monday by the Interactive Advertising Bureau suggests; it finds that brands will benefit from a 15 percent shift from the TV ad spend to online video.

The Federal Trade Commission last week reached a settlement with HTC America over charges the company failed to take reasonable steps to secure the software in its smartphones and tablet computers. The security flaws could have compromised the privacy of millions of consumers, the agency said. This is the FTC's first case against a mobile device manufacturer.
